Recording Editorial History 7/17/2018–morning

How does one talk about treason?  When we look at the law books, this is the only crime other than murder that can earn a person the death penalty.  Our founding fathers actually believed treason to be the worse than murder, which makes sense because at the time they were fighting to form a nation.

Of course I’m talking about President Donald John Trump.

It is difficult to imagine a more unstable individual in the highest office in the nation.  It’s like what if Joseph McCarthy hadn’t been shamed and ran for President and won?  I actually predicted that Trump would win, to much laughter from some of my friends.  I did not vote for him and wanted him to lose.  I predicted petty, small apocalypses under his brief reign before he loudly quit and claimed that he’d accomplished everything he set out to do.  I said he would quit because he is lazy and didn’t enjoy the constant pressure put upon him and his inability to delegate most of his duties to his lackeys.

But he is so much worse than I ever imagined.

Now this is an editorial and therefore I do not need direct proof to justify my assertions.  In this sense I am hardly any different than broadcast news.  But the subtleties and underlying reactions of the president to Vladimir Putin are very telling.  I mean, when have you ever seen Trump so cowed, so neutered, so humble, so completely awed and under control?  I mean, this is the man who a few days earlier jumped in from of the fucking Queen of England before realizing that maybe he should let the old lady go.  Her country after all, right?

Trump is usually a swaggering bully and seems perfectly at home denouncing everyone and everything that is America.  I have said that he hates America before, but it now seems even worse than that.  I don’t think he cares about America at all, or the whole world for that matter.  He is looking to build up Trump industries into a worldwide monopoly.  I mean, as much as people hate him, you can still stay at the fancy hotels of the President of the United States!  For some this would be very hard to resist.

So what are the crimes that lead me to call Donald Trump a traitor to his nation?  I don’t think he even needs to have committed any text book malfeasance to be guilty (although I have no doubt that he is guilty of many felonies throughout his life).  No, treason is more about actions, about a great giveaway to other powers, whether it’s secrets, weapons, borrowed influence, or gigantic sums of money with generous trade concessions.  It seems like Trump is transferring the massive NATO funds that he has condemned as wasteful and is just giving it all to Russia.  Apparently the North Atlantic Treaty Organization isn’t as important to business as Russia.  Trump is breaking up an international coalition to get into bed with a dictator who frequently has his enemies killed.

If this isn’t an example of treason that would cause John Adams’ head to explode, then it would merely be an example of his famous claim:

“There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy. It is not true, in fact, and nowhere appears in history. Those passions are the same in all men, under all forms of simple government, and when unchecked, produce the same effects of fraud, violence, and cruelty. When clear prospects are opened before vanity, pride, avarice, or ambition, for their easy gratification, it is hard for the most considerate philosophers and the most conscientious moralists to resist the temptation.”

This is the second time here in Recording Editorial History that I have quoted this passage.  John Adams should be elevated to the Prophet of America, a title he would no doubt hate because he also believed that “This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it.”

Donald Trump is a traitor, an outright and intentional sham.  He needs to be tried for these crimes and he needs to be treated just like anyone else who is guilty of this disgrace.  Tarred and feathered, and everything else that comes after this.  Public stocks at Independence hall where people can gather up the horse shit from the carriages outside the cracked Liberty Bell and smear it in his face.  Humiliation, the tearing away of arrogance and pride.  What could be a better punishment for a criminal like this?
