The Importance of Negative Publicity

To begin, tonight, 6/20/2019, will be the premiere of my second Recording Editorial History podcast, the topic: gender (demospinradio.com).  It airs at 9PM Western Standard Time USA, which is midnight here on the east coast USA.  Hopefully those of you elsewhere in the world (the vast majority of my audience here) can discern the time (for example, in India, at least part of, it will be 9AM).

Anyway, the written version of what will be discussed in detail, “The Feminization of Masculinity,” has apparently struck a chord with quite a few people under the eye of those comments.  Angry, cynical, exclusively male millennials attempted to pile on and shame me (I have no shame, or at the very least an extremely thick skin), and attempted to turn my comments around and condemn me with my own words.  It was hilarious, and eventually tragic, the increasing desperation of one person in particular forcing upon him such an emotional upheaval, armored with that noxious cynicism that invades every aspect of his life, apparently (I do not know this person at all, although the unintended exposure of his dire belief in nothing blares out like a cow being slowly slaughtered).  It got very sad, and I needed to back off, a sliver of human compassion wishing to avoid their making an even bigger fool of themselves.

And yet this person managed to inadvertantly help me, gaining me quite a few readers, particularly on my new, parallel Recording Editorial History site on Medium.com (https://medium.com/@asphlex7).  Readership there is still pretty small, supplimental to here, and yet the growth proves to me how negative reviews can sometimes help.

Several of this individual’s friends (or Facebook ‘friends,’ whatever that translates into in reality), decided with equally hollow cynicism to pile on support of the bland, repetitious comments this fellow made.  And they went on for hours and hours, days and days, trying to blame me for something beyond my cheaply publicizing the website within a comment made rather vaguely on topic.  And the explosion of cynical, frustrated rage surprised me.  Usually people not interested simply ignore me, which is generally expected.  Fine.

But this jackass, in the most childish manner possible, started blaring things on my Facebook timeline, accusing me of bigotry, then attempting to mock my masculinity based upon whatever starry stereotypes his frustrated mind could spit out in the moment (he even pasted an out-of-context exchange between us on his homepage as his new picture identifying him to the largely indifferent world).  He used the word ‘fuck’ in numerous tenses and forms believing that he might somehow insult me.  He tried painting me as a right-wing religious kook, which was the funniest of all allegations, considering how the open reality many of the pieces I have publically written, and many of the words I have actually said, violently contradict this.  What he and his handful of friends who jumped into the huddle displayed was a willful ignorance about human nature in the name of a childish, argumentative need to convince themselves they are right about everything (by the way, to highlight the emptiness of facebook friendship, somehow he and I are facebook friends, which is the only reason I promoted my shit on his page in the first place!  He seemed genuinely confused as to why, repeating the statement that the only time he posts anything is while shitting, which should inspire health concerns, considering how often he posts).

And so this will serve as the epilogue to an unexpected and very amusing exchange, to me merely proving my point in the essay of contention, and yet teaching possibly both of us a little bit more about the devolving state of communication in this increasingly post-literate world.

For anyone interested, here is a brief samplier of the silliness that went on between us:
