Why?
I mean, seriously
And it isn’t just people at their jobs. There are the amateurs, believing they know what they’re doing
They do not know what they’re doing
Some people do it to themselves, damaging their prospects in life without considering what the future holds
Other people are just plain stupid
We think that all animals are beneath us too, imagining that our smarts can outdo their superior strength and instincts
With children too
Some people are just selfish creeps
Or for fun, their idea of fun, and oh how they screw things up
This is less a condemnation of humanity itself than of our willful blindness, our inability to see beyond the immediacy of our momentary interests and concerns
or hatred
or anger
It is often a difficult world to live in, to function as a rational human being
and so we try to anesthetize ourselves to the horrors of one another
or engage in mindless cruelty
And soon, very soon, we learn to care about nothing.
And the world continues, the same as before, only slightly–just slightly–a darker place than yesterday, which was a little worse than the day before.
